Slopes, sandy loam, and the lake
Highland Village incorporated in 1963 and grew into a lakeside city with plenty of rolling ground. USDA soil maps show sloping fine sandy loams in parts of the city, with sandy topsoil over a clay subsoil. On a slope, water runs off before it soaks in, and loose mulch drifts downhill after a hard rain.
Two habits help on sloped beds. Water in shorter cycles with a break between them so each round has time to soak in, and use a shredded mulch that knits together and stays put. Terracing a steep bed with stone is another option, and we carry building stone for borders and low walls.
Highland Village's seasonal conservation rules prohibit lawn and landscape sprinkler watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 1 through September 30. Hand watering shrubs is allowed at any hour. If you irrigate with lake water or a private well, the city requires a sign visible from the street saying so.
Head south into Flower Mound and pick up Cross Timbers Rd (FM 1171). The entrance is on Cross Timbers Rd, even though the mailing address is 1616 Arrowhead Dr, Flower Mound, TX 75028. Open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5, and Sunday, 12 to 5. Hours shift with the seasons, so call ahead or check our Google listing before a special trip.
