A lake town with heavy soil
Lewisville grew up around water. The Elm Fork of the Trinity River runs through the city, and the Garza-Little Elm Dam, finished in 1954, created what is now Lewisville Lake. Below the dam, the city manages the 2,600-acre Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area in partnership with Lewisville ISD and UNT, on land where the Blackland Prairie meets the Eastern Cross Timbers.
Soils here tend to run heavier than in much of Flower Mound. Around Old Town, USDA soil maps show Wilson clay loam, a clay that shrinks as it dries and swells when it gets wet, and low ground near the Elm Fork maps as Trinity clay, an occasionally flooded bottomland soil. Heavy clay holds water, so drainage matters as much as how much you water. Raising beds a few inches, working in compost, and choosing plants that can handle wet winters and dry Augusts all help.
The City of Lewisville assigns sprinkler days by address: Tuesday and Saturday for even-numbered addresses, Wednesday and Sunday for odd. Hand watering and soaker hoses are not restricted. The city's Outdoor Watering Restrictions page has the current stage and details.
